Vinyl Horse and paddock, pasture fence

If a white post and board fence is what you want it might make sense to build a Vinyl rail fence. Sterling Fence Inc. uses Westec material and with Northern Vinyl Products doing the fabrication for us. The savings alone over the life of the fence in not painting will pay for the fence. Sterling Fence Inc. installs the vinyl in a 3 rail style, measuring 48" to the top of the top rail.

Horse and Paddock fence

Choosing horse fencing is an important consideration when setting up any environment for your horse. This applies whether it be a farm or simply backyard fencing. Fences are essentially an “agreement” between you and your horse as most horses are capable of escaping if they so desire. Fence related injuries are a very common cause of veterinary calls so safety should be a primary concern.

Several things should be considered before you install a fence. In most cases, the best and safest type of fencing is a wooden fence.  Treated Pine is the most cost-effective of all the wood horse fencing because it is so durable. They are also very weather-resistant as well as insect infestation-resistant. Because of their treatment they are considered the most decay and mold resistant of all woods.

Another material Sterling Fence Inc. uses is Mountain Split Rail from West Virginia. This fence is made of hardwood rails and treated pine posts. The rails overlap each other through the post giving it addtional strength.

The horse paddock and pasture fence we usually build is 48" high. Sterling Fence Inc. installs posts every 10' with the Mountain Split rail and every 8' with the post and Board Style,

How long does western red cedar fences last

Natural life of wood

The first thing you should know in estimating the life of your fence is the natural life of you wood. The most commonly used wood types for fences are cedar, spruce, and pine. Depending on the species, cedar may last for about 15-30 years, spruce may last for about 4-7 years, and pine may last for about 5-12 years.

We always tell customers that wood fences will last 20 to 25 years with posts being  replaced from time to time depending on the soil conditions. In broad terms, a fence will last twice as long as the posts.

Sterling Fence Inc. uses only Western Red Cedar wood.

Concrete strength

Concrete strength

Many factors influence the rate at which the strength of concrete increases after mixing. Some of these are discussed below. First, though a couple of definitions will be useful:

The process of strength growth is called 'hardening.' This is often confused with 'setting' but setting and hardening are not the same.

Setting is the stiffening of the concrete after it has been placed. A concrete can be 'set' in that it is no longer fluid, but it may still be very weak; you may not be able to walk on it, for example. Setting is due to early-stage calcium silicate hydrate formation and to ettringite formation. The terms 'initial set' and 'final set' are arbitrary definitions of early and later set; there are laboratory procedures for determining these using weighted needles penetrating into cement paste.

Hardening is the process of strength growth and may continue for weeks or months after the concrete has been mixed and placed. Hardening is due largely to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate as the cement continues to hydrate.

The rate at which concrete sets is independent of the rate at which it hardens. Rapid-hardening cement may have similar setting times to ordinary Portland cement.

Sterling Fence Inc. pours concrete footings for every post that we install.  It results in a stonger fence which stays straight over the many years of its life. When posts are driven, it usually results in a fence that will look " wavy" or will lean over time,

Weather in May affecting Construction

Maybe it was the rain after all. A month after construction job losses were blamed on the weather, Minnesota construction employment bounced back in May, with the sector adding 2,200 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The state as a whole added just 1,200 jobs in May, the state Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) reported Thursday.

Despite the gain, the state’s unemployment rate crept up a tenth of a percentage point, to 6.6 percent — still much better than the U.S. rate of 9.1 percent. DEED said the rate went up because more people are actively looking for work.

On top of the May jobs gains, DEED reported that April’s job losses were not as bad as previously reported. Minnesota lost 2,600 jobs in April, instead of the 5,200 originally reported.

“The private sector in Minnesota has shown steady improvement, adding 7,300 jobs in the past two months,” DEED Commissioner Mark Phillips said in a news release. “Initial claims for unemployment benefits continue to drop, and the Help Wanted OnLine count of advertised job vacancies in Minnesota jumped 14,000 in May, the third-biggest increase among all states.”

Construction led all sectors in May in jobs growth here. Construction has added jobs in three of the last four months, with April appearing to be a weather-related hiccup. Still, the sector has lost an overall 6,700 jobs since May 2010, even as construction jobs nationwide are up slightly in the same period.

The Associated General Contractors of Minnesota plans to conduct a study on why the state construction industry appears to be lagging behind the nation on jobs, said David Semerad, the group’s chief executive officer. Semerad guesses that an unusually harsh winter set building projects back. Political gridlock over the state budget is also sending a bad message to developers who might otherwise want to build in the state, he said.

Gov. Mark Dayton, a DFLer, and the Republican-dominated Legislature are engaging in a budget standoff over how to close a two-year, $5 billion deficit. Many state government services, including transportation construction projects, will likely shut down at the end of the month if a deal isn’t reached. The budget fight is placing thousands of transportation-related construction jobs in danger, Semerad said.
